The Horn of Africa, the easternmost projection of the African continent, struggles with bouts of armed conflict and human rights violations committed under diverse governmental arrangements that have been in place since independence from colonial powers. Somalia continues to fight a civil war that has torn apart the country and forced many to flee. The Ethiopian government has pursued a policy of targeting students and intellectuals, resulting in massive human rights violations. The people of Sudan are suffering from egregious human rights violations in the Darfur region; and the South Sudanese grapple with child abductions and other violence as they work to uphold the very delicate peace agreement brokered with the North in 2005.
Over the past several years, Minnesota has become a new home to many refugees from the region. Drawing on some of our newest residents’ intimate knowledge of the Horn region and its various economic, social, political environments, the Human Rights Program is in a unique position to help gather further information and draw attention to many of the human rights issues currently faced in the region.
