March 2, 2006 Letter Writing Event

On March 2, 2006 the Human Rights Program along with Minnesota State Senator Mee Moua’s office sponsored a Letter Writing and Town Hall meeting at the Lao Family Center in Saint Paul, MN. Students and community volunteers assisted victims in writing individual communications to the United Nations Special Rapporteurs on Religious Intolerance and Contemporary Forms of Racism. Over 400 people showed up for the letter writing session and the Human Rights Program students of the University of Minnesota gathered over 170 statements of  information such as photographs, certificates and receipts of payment for grave sites from the victim families by conducting personal interviews. April 24th, 2006 “Hear Our Grief: Minnesotans Say No to Grave Desecration Rally”

On April 24, 2006, the Human Rights Internship Class co-sponsored a rally at the Minnesota State Capitol along with Senator Mee Moua’s office. “Hear Our Grief: Minnesotans Say NO to Grave Desecration Rally” took place at the Minnesota State Capitol to witness the Minnesota House and Senate pass a resolution in support of the Hmong and urged the government of Thailand to investigate the exhumations and return remains to family members. The City of Minneapolis also proclaims this day as “Minnesotans Against Grave Desecration Day.”

December 9, 2008 Reception Honoring Professor James Anaya’s Visit to Minnesota

Professor James Anaya, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, was welcomed to the Twin Cities the night before the December 10, 2008 Consultation with the UN Expert event with a reception at the University of Minnesota featuring elected officials, Hmong community leaders and human rights advocates. Read more…

December 10, 2008 Consultation with the United Nations Expert on the Desecration of Hmong Graves

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, Professor James Anaya, visited Minnesota on December 10, 2008, to hear testimony concerning the desecration of Hmong graves at Wat Tham Krabok in Saraburi, Thailand. Professor Anaya visited at the invitation of the Human Rights Program at the University of Minnesota. The December 10 hearing took place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Coffman Memorial Union Theater on the east bank campus of the University.  Read more…
