Mission: Casa de Esperanza was created to eliminate violence against women in the Latino community and the community at large. Refugee and Immigrant Program
The Advocates for Human Rights seeks to promote and protect the human rights of asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants. International human rights law requires the fair, just and humane treatment of all persons in the United States - regardless of immigration status. The Asylum Project provides volunteer legal representation to indigent clients seeking asylum in the U.S. because they fear persecution in their countries of origin. Potential Projects include: (1) country and case research for volunteer lawyers; (2) assist with client intakes including write-up of interviews; (3) research on issues related to current caseload such as female genital mutilation, social group, and caste. French or Spanish language skills are helpful.
Death Penalty Project
The Death Penalty Project was formulated in 1991 to provide legal representation, education and advocacy on death penalty issues by helping to defeat the reintroduction of capital punishment in Minnesota . The Death Penalty Project works through a community based initiative to create support opposing the death penalty, along with providing 100 specially trained volunteer attorneys and paralegals to assist death row in a system that has serious flaws in its legal proceedings. The Death Penalty Project has also served as a resource for local, national, and international communities on issues surrounding the death penalty.
Women’s Program
The Women’s Program promotes women’s human rights through research, documentation of abuses, public education, human rights advocacy and technical assistance programs. The Program achieves its goals through international, national, and local initiatives. Potential projects: (1) assist with planning special events, including international training institutes; (2) research and editing; (3) grant management and writing.
